expect the flash disk to run out after a while (or so says the Disk-HOWTO)

check /etc/inittab that is where the getty calls are made and make
sure the second field has whatever runlevel you have (3 or wot-not) included:
c1:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty1 linux

URGENT HELP PLEASE - Login problem

Post by P.Bonfil » Thu, 05 Aug 1999 04:00:00

I have set un mini installation of Linux (2.2.5) in order to fit in less
than 6MO (a flash disk is used in place of the conventionnal hard disk).
The purpose of this is to have a diskless, stand alone box used as an
automation device. It includes a network layer.

Every thing is nice, the system boots but I'm unable to login (localy or
remotely). I'm even able to start the control software via the
boot.local script but login is impossible.
Locally I get : invalid password for 'UNKNOWN' user on tty1
and when I want to quit with the Ctrl+Alt+Del : You don't exist. Go Away
Remotely I get : Unable to connect to remote host. Connexion denied

However, I have check the libraries (with ldd) and everything is OK
The files passwd, group, shadow, gshadow are also installed

I'm really in trouble and your help will be greatly appreciated.

But it is a brand new flash and in fact used only for boot purpose.
After boot, everything is running in RAM (no swapping). Moreover,
everything excepted the login runs fine, even my application running in
the background.

Inittab seems OK, almost the same but SuSE Linux uses mingetty instead
of agetty
1:123:respawn:/sbin/mingetty --noclear tty1
2:123:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty2
3:123:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty3
