My modem dials into the ISP, the username, and password goes in but then I
just get a load of *at the bottom of the terminal window. It then says
something about pppd. So I typed pppd when offline into the console and all
I get is this *again ("%^&$""$&))()(&^$^$) I find this a bit of a
coincidence. Is this output normal. I have used xISP, kppp & pppd - same
problem. I have a Sportster Voice 33.6 FaxModem.

This is normal( pppd try to connect pppd ).
Pppd use the actual tty as default.

You can connect the pppd's after dialin with "pppd /dev/modem".
