RedHat 5.1 install failed -- can't use ATAPI CD-ROM

Post by Albert Wan » Tue, 08 Sep 1998 04:00:00

Hi,

I've been trying to install RedHat 5.1 for a few days without success...

Intel P2-233 / 128MB / Intel PD440FX mother board with onboard
parimary and secondary IDE controllers.  The CD-ROM is Pioneer
ATAPI Model DR-A24X 0102, connected to the primary IDE as the
slave device. ATI 3DCharger graphic card... Adaptec 2940 SCSI
controller... Smart and Friendly SCSI CD-R 2006...

This PC has been running Windows 95/98 for almost a year without
any problem, which means all hardware is in the working condition.

When I start the initial install of RedHat 5.1...
.........
<4> ide: i82371 PIIX (Triton) on PCI bus 0 function 57
<4>       ide0: BM-DMA at 0xffa0-0xffa7
<4>       ide1: BM-DMA at 0xffa8-0xffaf
<4> hda: WDC AC3400L, 3815MB w/256KB cache, CHS=969/128/63, DMA
<4> hdb: Pioneer CD-ROM ATAPIModel DR-A24X 0102, ATAPI CD-ROM
       Drive
<4> hdc: WDC AC36400L, 6149MB w/256KB cache, CHS=13328/15/63, DMA
<4> ide2: ports already in use, skipping probe
<4> ide0 at 0x1f0-0x1f7, 0x3f6 on irq 14
<4> ide1 at 0x170-0x177, 0x376 on irq 15
<6> floppy drive....
......

It seems to recognize the ATAPI cdrom properly.  However, whem I start
to
install from it, I got:

<4> hdb: irq timeout: status=0x51
<4> hdb: irq timeout: error=0x20
<4> hdb: irq timeout: status=0x51
<4> hdb: irq timeout: error=0x60
<4> hdb: irq timeout: status=0x50
<4> hdb: irq timeout: status=0x50
<4> ATAPI reset complete
<4> hdb: irq timeout: status=0x50  ====> A
<4> hdb: irq timeout: status=0x50
<4> hdb: irq timeout: status=0x50
<4> hdb: irq timeout: status=0x50
<4> ATAPI reset complete
<4> hdb: irq timeout: status=0x50
<4> hdb: irq timeout: status=0x50
<4> hdb: irq timeout: status=0x50
<4> hdb: irq timeout: status=0x50
<4> ATAPI reset complete
<4> hdb: irq timeout: status=0x50
<4> hdb: irq timeout: status=0x50
<4> hdb: irq timeout: status=0x50
<4> hdb: irq timeout: status=0x50
<4> ATAPI reset complete
<4> hdb: irq timeout: status=0x50
<4> end_request: I/O error, dev 03:40, sector 0  ======> B

Then the above msg repeats from line A through B over and over,
until eventually (hours) it sends msg saying can't mount hdb.

The hardware I'm using seem to be popular ones.  I'd appreciate any
one can give me some suggestions...

Also, I'm trying to boot off windows 98 and copy /RedHat to a partition
to attempt an install from hard disk.  I then go all the way to the
point
where I need to specify the location of /RedHat.  However, those FAT32
partitions are not listed for me to choose.  So, without Linux already
installed, how do I copy /RedHat to a DOS partition to get Linux
recognize
/Redhat during the initial install from hard disk?

Thanks.

Albert

RedHat 5.1 install failed -- can't use ATAPI CD-ROM

Looks like you've got a tertiary controller. Just curiousity - what have
you got on it?

Quote:> <4> ide0 at 0x1f0-0x1f7, 0x3f6 on irq 14
> <4> ide1 at 0x170-0x177, 0x376 on irq 15

I think that the above line may be the key to your problem. See below....

Quote:> <4> hdb: irq timeout: status=0x51
> <4> hdb: irq timeout: error=0x20
> <4> hdb: irq timeout: status=0x51
> <4> hdb: irq timeout: error=0x60
> <4> hdb: irq timeout: status=0x50
> <4> hdb: irq timeout: status=0x50
> <4> ATAPI reset complete

I think that the I/O addresses and / or IRQ that need to be used for your
secondary ide port are not the ones used (by default) by the kernel. You
probably need to specify the correct values. You should read
/usr/src/Documentation/ide.txt (assuming your kernel sources are in this
directory) to find out how to do this.

Kenneth

1. failed to recognize cd-rom on RedHat 5.1 instal

This is Red Hat Support ticket #42387 that they never responded :(

During the installation of RedHat 5.1, I'm encountering the following
probelms...

Both the primary and secondary IDE controllers are
on board on the Intel motherboard/FX440.  I have been
running win95/98 on this pc for months without any
problem from the cdrom.

It should be viewed by Linux as:

hda: 4GB WD IDE disk
hdb: Pioneer ATAPI cdrom (DR-A24X)
hdc: 6GB WD IDE disk
sda: Seagate 1GB SCSI disk on AHA 2940

However...

during the initial installation, at the boot: prompt,
I have tried to:

1. just hit return
2. entered "linux hdb=cdrom"

it'll bring me to where I can specify what type of
media contains the packages to be installed... By

selecting cdrom, it'll ask me to put the cdrom into
the drive.  I did and hit return...  it'd then just
clean out the screen, leaving just a cursor blinking
for a really long time (hours)... after hours, it says that
mounting the cdrom on /dev/hdb failed.

In both the above two cases, I saw the three IDE devices
(2 HD's and 1 cdrom) being properly recognized, but it
just later on fails to mount the cdrom.  For case 2 where
I specified hdb=cdrom, it would recognize it during the
startup, but the last message before getting into the
installation screen is that it doesn't understand the
"hdb=cdrom" parameter...

Also, both cases take hours to timeout...

While it's *hung*, I switch to install log and see the
following message...

<4>hdb: irq timeout: status=0x51
<4>hdb: irq timeout: error=0x60
<4>hdb: irq timeout: status=0x50
<4>hdb: irq timeout: status=0x50
<4>hdb: irq timeout: status=0x50
<4>hdb: ATAPI reset complete
<4>hdb: irq timeout: status=0x50
<4>hdb: irq timeout: status=0x50
<4>hdb: irq timeout: status=0x50
<4>hdb: ATAPI reset complete
<4>end_request: I/O error, dev 03:40, sector 0
<4>isofs_read_super: bread failed, dev 03:40 iso_blknum 16 block 32
<4>hdb: irq timeout: status=0x50
<4>hdb: irq timeout: status=0x50
<4>hdb: irq timeout: status=0x50
repeate........

Can someone tell me what 0x50 status is and possibly a fix to go around
it?

Thanks.

Albert
