of course!  everything is possible in Linux. :)  probably the eastiest way is
ctrl-alt-+ or -  that will cycle though the available modes.  to make it the
default, you have to go in and put 800x600 first in the section like:

        res     640x480 800x600 1024x768

I'm not home (ie, on my linux machine), so I can tell you exactly where it is,
email me, and I'll find it if you still can't make it work..

Try ctrl-alt-+ and ctrl-alt--(that's a minus sign :->)

How do I get 800x600 or greater using xfree86. I ran through the xf86config
 program, but it comes up in a lower resolution. Maybe it's just coming up with
 larger fonts. I can't tell. But my video card is capable of high res and small
 fonts in windows, so I'd like the same high resolution and smallish fonts in
 xfree86.

Is there a straightforward way to do this?

first I would use ctrl_alt_+ to switch through all the video modes.

then I would edit the XF86Config where it states the "640x480" "800x600"
...  and put "800x600" (or desired resolution) first.

1. Wanted: Xconfig for ATI GUP VLB 800x600

Please mail me an Xconfig for ATI GUP VLB, resolution 800x600x256.
My monitor is a NEC MultiSync 1 (!), standard clocks at 800x600.

I'm not sure why my Xconfig doesn't work yet.
