I know this is not what you want to hear, and maybe someone will respond with a better
solution but:
The driver for the Etherexpress 16C card is an Alpha driver. The docs on it suggest
that you might expect flakey behavior. We have several linux boxes here and originally
tried to use the EtherExpress cards in them.
Some worked fine, others exhibited the problem you describe. The machine I am typing this
from, when it had an EtherExpress card installed, world rarely run for more than 30
minutes without porducing that error and*.
Our solution: We replaced the EtherExpress cards. We are using NE2000 clones now with
no problems. You can get generic NE2000 clones for $20.00 these days and they work well
under Linux. At that price, I saw no reason to keep screwing around with the EtherExpress
cards.
