Newbie help - 0x10 returned by LILO

Post by James Oughto » Sat, 12 Apr 1997 04:00:00

Hi,
I'm getting the above error when trying to boot from a boot disk created
for Red-Hat 4.1. The LILO prompt asking if I want to install / repair come
and I hit enter, then It shows Linux loading , for around 7 secs and then I
get the prompt Error 0x10. I cant seem to find any pointers as to the
problem . The system is a Dell GXM75 upgraded to 120 pentium with 1Gb
Quantum disk, two 3Com 3c509 cards and a Trio 64 V+ Video Cards .

Would really appreciate any help with my first venture into Linux.

James

Newbie help - 0x10 returned by LILO

I've since found out the 0x10 error code means a CRC error has occured. On
a 1Gb drive I've set-up a single 100Mb partition and left the rest. Are
these partitions too large? I have tried running scandisk from DOS to see
if disk errors can be found ( the only disk repair tools to hand. ) Is
there a bootable linux based tool to help me? Do I need to partition the
areas with a linux based fdisk or should LILO find the partitions and
set-itself up accordingly. I've searched in the HOW-TOs but cant find
anything obvois to help me through this first stage. If I'm being stupid
please let me know.

Thanks
James

Hi

the 0x10 error is "CRC Error"
The suggested fix is to try booting again several times.
The problem is on the media. But since you are useing a floppy several
things can be done.
1- try cleaning the heads on the drive.
2- If you can use another drive.
3- make a copy of the disk and try useing the copy.
4- try making a copy of the disk useing a friend's computer
5- This isn't very likely but just in case check that the cables are
properly insterted.

With floppy drives there are tolerances on the alignment of the drives.
Sometimes on drive will read what another can't.

When you examine the drive with the Linux fdisk , do you get any
warning about having more than 1024 cylinders?   Have you done a Linux
format of the partition you are trying to use ?
