Hiya...
I'm trying to install Linux 1.2.1 (from Slackware) for the first time
and (a) I've read through much on-line and Yggdrasil documentation,
(b) I've swapped out all my other boards to rule out possible HW
conflicts. Despite these things, I *cannot* get my PC (Pentium 90mhz)
to boot from 3.5 floppy and successfully access my 1.0g SCSI HD
(which I plan to install all of Linux onto).
I can boot fine under DOS/Windows - these OS/software are on a Connor
IDE HD (C:), and from there, I can even access the SCSI drive (via
the Adaptec 1542CF controller plugged into an ISA slot). When
I try booting from the Slackware 'boot' disk, however, it recognizes
the Adaptec and Seagate, but then gives me ever-repeating **timeout**
errors while trying to access the Seagate (ID 0) HD. There's nothing
on the Seagate right now (no partitions at all), so I can't figure
the problem.
Linux SCSI-howto documentation states that this controller (1542CF)
is "extremely sensitive" to cables/termination, but I've already
confirmed that it works fine under DOS. Is there something perhaps
that DOS does to access the drive (maybe changing a 1542CF parameter
via software) that Linux does *not* do (and the hardware config on
the board is incorrect)???
Anyone help/suggestions?
Thanks *very* much in advance,
Eric Hansen
