Help with running X

Post by Albert Wiers » Fri, 06 Sep 1996 04:00:00

I would really appreciate someone to send me email about this problem... if they have a good idea as to what it might be.

Appearantly, I do not have any free VTs. Here are the processes I am running...

    1 con 0 N   0:57 init [5]
    2 s00 1 N   0:00 (kflushd) S 1
    3 s00 1 N   0:00 (kswapd) S 1
    9 s00 9 <   0:00 update (bdflush)
   29 psf 2 N   0:13 /usr/sbin/crond -l10
   43 psf 4 N   0:00 /usr/sbin/syslogd
   45 psf 4 N   0:00 /usr/sbin/klogd
   49 psf 4 N   0:01 /usr/sbin/inetd
   51 psf 5 N   0:00 /usr/sbin/lpd
   54 psf 2 N   0:00 /usr/sbin/rpc.mountd
   56 psf 5 N   0:00 /usr/sbin/rpc.nfsd
   60 psf 6 N   0:00 sendmail: accepting connections
   64 psf 6 N   0:00 /usr/local/etc/httpd/httpd
   67 s03 6 N   0:00 /sbin/agetty 38400 tty3 linux
   68 s04 6 N   0:00 /sbin/agetty 38400 tty4 linux
   69 s05 6 N   0:00 /sbin/agetty 38400 tty5 linux
   70 s06 7 N   0:00 /sbin/agetty 38400 tty6 linux
   74 psf 4 <   0:00 nmbd
  791 psf 4 N   0:00 in.telnetd
  792 v24 7 N   0:00 -bash
  802 psf 4 N   0:00 in.telnetd
  803 v35 8 N   0:00 -bash
  816 psf 4 N   0:00 in.telnetd
  828 v60 8 N   0:00 -bash
  829 v61 8 N   0:00 -bash
   47 psf 4 N   0:00 /usr/sbin/rpc.portmap
   71 psf 6 N   0:00 /usr/local/etc/httpd/httpd
   72 psf 6 N   0:00 /usr/local/etc/httpd/httpd
   73 psf 6 N   0:00 /usr/local/etc/httpd/httpd
  817 pr1 8 N   0:00 -bash
  993 pr1 9 N   0:00 ps -ax

I have not started any "extra" getty processes. My question is in this section:

   67 s03 6 N   0:00 /sbin/agetty 38400 tty3 linux
   68 s04 6 N   0:00 /sbin/agetty 38400 tty4 linux
   69 s05 6 N   0:00 /sbin/agetty 38400 tty5 linux
   70 s06 7 N   0:00 /sbin/agetty 38400 tty6 linux

Should the s03, s04, etc. be v03, v04? Could this be the problem? What can I do to correct it?

Please assist.. I'm running Linux 2.0.15 with XFree 3.1.2.

For instance, startx says:

XFree86 Version 3.1.2 / X Window System
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6000)
Operating System: Linux
Configured drivers:
S3: accelerated server for S3 graphics adaptors (Patchlevel 0)
      mmio_928, s3_generic

Fatal server error:
xf86OpenConsole: Cannot find a free VT

TRANS(SocketUNIXConnect) () can't connect: errno = 111
giving up.
xinit:  Connection refused (errno 111):  unable to connect to X server
xinit:  No such process (errno 3):  Server error.
