PPP - PAP - peer refused to authenticate

PPP - PAP - peer refused to authenticate

Post by Ed. Lo » Sun, 27 Oct 1996 04:00:00

I am trying to establish a ppp session with the IBM Global
Network from Linux using pap. The problem that I am having
is that I get a message that says:

   peer refused to authenticate

IBM does not have specific ppp setup instructions for Linux ppp.
IBM's generic ppp setup instructions say:

Use ppp
Username is   internet.youraccount.youruserid
   in my case internet.usinet.edlott
Password is   PASSWORD (for this example)
I.P. will be assigned dynamically
subnet not important
host name not important
domain name not important
data 8N1
enable all hardware compression
do not enable any software compression
logon scripts not used
PAP enabled
CHAP not supported

Below are copies of the various scripts and files I use to
start ppp. I do have ppp working to another ISP (but not
using PAP). I do have a ppp connection to the IBM ISP
working using NetManage Chameleon 4.6 from my DOS/Windows
3.1 system. I am running RedHat Linux 3.0.3 upgraded to
2.0.20 and ppp 2.2.0f-1.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Al:

Thanks for the prompt response. Removing +pap resolved
the problem. When I read the pppd man page I thought that +pap
was required to enable PAP authentication. Your assistance is
as always much appreciated.
