sb16 pnp troubles

Post by Baruch Eve » Sun, 31 Dec 1899 09:00:00

Hello,

I have a strange problem with my sb16, It's installed
identified and the kernel modules for it seem to be loaded.

The card is obviously not working.

The strange thing is that /proc/sound shows that the
card has been identified, it shows the audio device,
synth services, midi device and the rest. but the installed
drivers and card config are empty.

I'm using kernel 2.2.14 and the drivers are in modules.
I can hear samples (sometimes) by using sndconfig, and
the isapnp identifies the sound card on bootup.

Any hint on what to do or check, will be of great help.

I can only tell I had the same trouble until I installed the Alsa sound driver.
As the alsa modules will get integrated into the kernel modules anyway, I think
that's a reasonable approach. The latest version is 0.5.7, avoid the 0.5.6.

cat /dev/sndstat.  If your card appears in parentheses, there is a
problem.  Lemme know what turns up.

check out the sound-howto on linuxdoc.org

1. SB16 PnP troubles

Every now and then, I just can't resist trying to get my
SB16 PnP card to work in Linux.  I happen to be trying
in Slackware with a 2.0.35 kernel, but I've not had much
better luck with RH 5.2 or SuSE 6.1.  (Each seems to
take a different approach to the problem.)  Web pages
with sound are still silent for me.  I can't seem to get
past square one.

If I compile the kernel module with dma set to 1,5, then when I
load the module, /proc/dma shows 1 for SB8 and 5 for SB16;
except that the card seems to be retricted to 1,3.  (That's
the way it seems to work in Win95).  And putting the
second DMA at 5 in isapnp.conf seems to be ignored.  I can
play some .wav sounds, but not others.  (Maybe some are
8 bit files, and others are 16 bit files?)

If I compile the kernel module with dma set 1,3, then when I
load the module, it says there's a dma conflict.  (Even though
/proc/dma only shows "1, SB8 and 4, cascade".

Whereas I've read over the Sound HOWTO, and a PnP web page, I still
find this whole area very confusing.  ...And marvelling at how at
least one other operating system has managed to deal with sound
cards "rather effortlessly" whereas Linux handles sound in a way
to baffle the experts--like me :)

(I ignored sound for a lot of years, but just knowing that it works
in Windows and I can't make it work in Linux has bugged the heck out
of me for the past year.)
