Can not install Slackware 3.1 Linux

Post by ITCAMBRIDG » Thu, 26 Jun 1997 04:00:00

Hi-

I just got a Slackware distribution for Linux 2.0.29, and can't find the
right boot image to create a boot image disk. First I tried bare.i image
file for my generic IDE CD-ROM, but hangs during booting when it gets to
CD-ROM drive right after the hard drive. Then I tried every other image
file that were in the distribution for IDE drives and got the same result
from all of them...

I've had install the Slackware for 1.2.3 a while ago on the same machine
with the same configuration and used idecd image file and had no problems,
but I can't find the idecd image dirve for Linux 2.0.29 in their
distribution.

Any ideas what I could do? Where I could find idecd image file for 2.0.29,
or what happend to it in version 2.0.29?

Thank in advance for any ideas

Kevin

'bare.i' now includes the atapi IDE drivers that were a part of the older
'idecd.i' boot image files.

I suggest you check your hardware configurations, especially SB compatible
sound cards, network interface cards and internal modem cards that may have
been added since your last Linux install. I have found that many of these
cards hog I/O port space beyond their configured positions. Try removing
all adapters except those absolutely required for operation (HD/FD only).

If you find an offending adapter, try configuring it I/O port far from
competing components.

Hope this helps you out.

Regards,

Brian.

1. Installed 3.1. Have questions (not only about 3.1)

Hello!

I just upgraded from 2.8 to 3.1. Not really upgraded. Just made
total reinstall. Now i have some questions

--- 1 ---
I think i have made a grave mistake. I have created 64Mb swap having
32MB RAM. AFter installing X and KDE i have realized that i actually needed
about 120MB of swap. Is there a way to resize file systems ?

--- 2----
I am using russian koi8-r locate and moused really interferes with the
letters (russian
small "PE" for example). The handbook says to set the variable (dont'
remember the name now,
but i typed it correctly i am sure) to 0x03. I did that - nothing changed.
How do I REALLY choose
other chars for mouse arrow. Btw, why there is no mouse mode like in DOS.
Just changing
the color attribute w/o touching the chargen ?

--- 3-----
I have SB 16 (non PNP) and  compiled VoxWare drivers for it. As you know
SB16  only has
MIDI port (no MIDI device). When I tryied ommiting sbmidi device from kernel
config befire
compiling , the kernel does not compile. So, i had to compile the kernel
with OPL *AND*
MIDI devices. Is there a way to compile kernel w/o midi device?

--- 4----
Is there a way to move language switcher from CapsLock to some other key ?

This is all for now :)

Thanks in advance.
