Redhat 7.3 has bug?

Post by DX » Thu, 19 Sep 2002 11:58:41

i recently installed RH7.3.  Looks like it uses a screen saver, (called
xscreensaver, maybe), so even when i am on the command prompt, if i don't
use my mouse and keyboard for a while then my monitor will turn off (to
sleep mode).  The problem is: each time when this happens, i can't remotely
ping this machine, i can't use ssh program to access this machine.

but if i touch my mouse, i see the monitor back on have this message

Red Hat Linux release 7.3 (Valhalla)
Kernel 2.4.18-3 on an i586
user login: eth0: RealTek RTL-8029 found at 0xff80, IRQ 10,
00:20:18:2B:A4:E0

then if i push the "enter" button, i get this message back:

user login:

Now i can ping and use ssh to reach this machine again.

I really think there is a bug with this screen saver.

How can i disable this screen saver, so when i am in the command prompt it
won't turn on.
(i probably should call it screen saver because when it's on, my screen just
turn black, then after a while my monitor starts to make some noise, and
instantly my pc becomes unreachable).

Thank you

looks like you have APM enabled for the machine

Or sometimes you have to disable such power saving features in the BIOS
(CMOS setup), since it may not be under Linux control.

Screen blanking alone, even if you set it to suspend your monitor with
setterm in the console or dpms in X, does not stop network an other
functions.  Something is making your box go totally asleep.

1. Redhat 7.3 SMP and 'sa' bug

I'm having the same problem referenced in this thread:

http://groups.google.ca/groups?q=%22Cannot+append+data%22++sa1&hl=en&...

Essentially, "the command sa1 fails with 'cannot append data to that
file'."

The cron job is /etc/cron.d/sysstat:

# run system activity accounting tool every 10 minutes
*/10 * * * * root /usr/lib/sa/sa1 1 1

I'm going to go ahead and comment out the reference to 'sa', but does
anyone have any idea why this is broken? Will commenting this out
cause any harm to the system?

Thanks,
Erica
