CHAP auth + Linux don't work

Post by linma » Sun, 31 Dec 1899 09:00:00

Hello!

I have a problem with PPP 2.3.11 and REDHAT 6.2. My ISP use
CHAP authentication.

This is my /etc/ppp/options file

domain xxxxxxx.net
crtscts
modem
defaultroute
noipdefault

I connect with minicom to my ISP then
CTRL A Q and try

pppd -d -detach /dev/modem 115200 &

Then i get the output...

[1] 783

Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/modem
sent [LCP ConfReq id=0x1 <asyncmap 0x0> <magic 0xd1f06c30> <pcomp> <accomp>]

They lied, or was clueless.

>Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/modem
>sent [LCP ConfReq id=0x1 <asyncmap 0x0> <magic 0xd1f06c30> <pcomp> <accomp>]
>rcvd [LCP ConfRej id=0x1 <pcomp> <accomp>]

The remote end doesn't like you pcomp and accomp, but that isn't fatal

Quote:>sent [LCP ConfReq id=0x2 <asyncmap 0x0> <magic 0xd1f06c30>]

Your system accepts and tries again

Quote:>rcvd [LCP ConfAck id=0x2 <asyncmap 0x0> <magic 0xd1f06c30>]

The remote end has now acvepted your paramters.

Now the the parameters from the remote end.

Quote:>rcvd [LCP ConfReq id=0x8 <auth pap> <magic 0xba2f0f8e> <asyncmap 0x0>]

The other end kindly ask your system to use PAP authentication.

Quote:>sent [LCP ConfNak id=0x8 <auth chap MD5>]

Your system kindly ask the other end to use CHAP MD5 instead.

Quote:>rcvd [LCP ConfReq id=0x9 <auth pap> <magic 0xba2f0f8e> <asyncmap 0x0>]
>sent [LCP ConfNak id=0x9 <auth chap MD5>]
>rcvd [LCP ConfReq id=0xa <auth pap> <magic 0xba2f0f8e> <asyncmap 0x0>]

>rcvd [LCP ConfReq id=0xd <auth pap> <magic 0xba2f0f8e> <asyncmap 0x0>]
>sent [LCP ConfRej id=0xd <auth pap>]

Your system tels the other end not to use pap auth.

Quote:>rcvd [LCP ConfReq id=0xe <auth pap> <magic 0xba2f0f8e> <asyncmap 0x0>]

The log says otherwise:

Quote:> Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/modem
> sent [LCP ConfReq id=0x1 <asyncmap 0x0> <magic 0xd1f06c30> <pcomp>
> <accomp>]
> rcvd [LCP ConfRej id=0x1 <pcomp> <accomp>]

> rcvd [LCP ConfAck id=0x2 <asyncmap 0x0> <magic 0xd1f06c30>]
> rcvd [LCP ConfReq id=0x8 <auth pap> <magic 0xba2f0f8e> <asyncmap 0x0>]
> sent [LCP ConfNak id=0x8 <auth chap MD5>]
> rcvd [LCP ConfReq id=0x9 <auth pap> <magic 0xba2f0f8e> <asyncmap 0x0>]
> sent [LCP ConfNak id=0x9 <auth chap MD5>]
> rcvd [LCP ConfReq id=0xa <auth pap> <magic 0xba2f0f8e> <asyncmap 0x0>]

Ect.

The other side isn't configured to authenticate you with CHAP but will
authenticate you with PAP.  It gets to choose so you'll have to configure
pppd to agree to PAP.

No he does not. He continually tells you he uses pap authentication. You
keep insisting on chap.

Quote:>rcvd [LCP ConfReq id=0x9 <auth pap> <magic 0xba2f0f8e> <asyncmap 0x0>]

He asks for pap

Quote:>sent [LCP ConfNak id=0x9 <auth chap MD5>]

You say no, and suggest chap.

Quote:>rcvd [LCP ConfReq id=0xa <auth pap> <magic 0xba2f0f8e> <asyncmap 0x0>]

He asks for pap

Quote:>sent [LCP ConfNak id=0xa <auth chap MD5>]

You say no and suggest chap.
etc.

Quote:>Anyone know what to do ?

Use pap.

1. pppd +auth don't work with shadow ?

Hi,

since I have the shadow pwsystem my pppd and ipppd don't let users in
with the "auth" switch on. I get the error that their pw is wrong, but
its not. The ppppd IS compiled for shadow.
Where shall I look ? Do I have to take care of something special with
shadow system ? Something I forgot ?

ANYONE that got shadow and pppd running please reply

THX !

bye
