Newbie Kernel Questions

Post by Ryan Si » Mon, 09 Feb 1998 04:00:00

Hello all, I was hoping somebody could help me with this question...

I downloaded and installed RedHat 5.0 from my harddrive very recently
and have so far been very impressed and happy with it. However, I
downloaded a driver for my AWE64 soundcard which requires some changes
to be made to the kernel.

However, my /usr/src/linux directory is completely empty. All
documents I've read state that this is where the uncompiled kernel is
supposed to reside. Did I not install everything? Is there some way I
can get whatever files I may need? (ftp? web?)

As the subject says, I'm a complete newbie here, so I just hope my
question makes some sense to someone...

Thanks.

You probably did not download the source.
Did you download the developement system?
I would recommend getting the CD.

Yep, you were right. I went back and checked RedHat's ftp site more
thoroughly and, sure enough, I found what I needed. Thanks...

1. Newbie Kernel Question

Am curious, not that there is anything wrong, and I am probably too
"new" to even think of asking at this point, but.....................

How does one first go about upgrading to another kernel release?  My
machine is running fine...running redhat 8.0 on this box.  What are
the systematic steps one has to consider when it comes to thinking
about "upgrading/updating" a system kernel?

When does one know enough to leave well enough alone?  LOL

My greatest fear is to "tinker" to the point of having to
reload/re-install.  Any recommended sites that you can think of that
would lend the greatest amount of assistance with the least amount of
linux-guru-ism?

I think these boards are incredible, feel kind of "out-of-place even
posting, have been doing alot of browsing, GREAT BUNCH OF PEOPLE!!!

Thanx
