: I just set up linux on a Pentium, and I went through the XF86Config
: program, but when I try startx, I get the following messages:
: "A configured device found, but display modes could not be resolved"
: Fatal server error
: no screen found
: xinit: Connection refused (errno 111); unable to connect to x server
: xinit: No such process (errno 3); server error
: I have a Nanao FlexScan f760ew with an Imagine 128 video card.
I don't have the answer I'm afraid, but it might be worth sharing my recent
attempts to solve this.
I have much the same messages as you. I made some progress when I installed
XF86Setup from one of my CDs (Redhat recent version - sorry can't quote a
number). It lets me setup the video card type and monitor and then tries to
start the X server I chose. This works fine and it *is* able to start the
server (XF86_VGA16 in my case - at least I think this is the easiest one to
start with). It then asks you if you want to save the configuration in
/etc/XF86Config. I do this and exit X (I have no choice over the exit).
When I try to restart X using startx I get a blank screen. I have found that
I can recover by using Alt-SysRq and it leaves me with a screenful of messages
like the ones you describe.
The XF86Config file which XF86Setup writes doesn't seem to match exactly the
settings I chose. For example, I chose 800x600 and there a no entries at all
for that resolution. There seem to be a number of XF86Config files in
different places. I have tried renaming them to make sure they're not being
used instead of /etc/XF86Config. No luck so far.
I think I'm going to have to study the XF86Config file and try to make a
minimal one.
Anyone else got any suggestions?
