Hot to access a CDROM as a raw device ?

Post by Marcin Skubiszews » Sat, 03 Jan 1998 04:00:00

I have a CDROM with data in TAR format. I would like to access this
CDROM as a raw device, and to read the data. How can this be done ?  I
use Linux 2.0.30. (Accessing /dev/cdrom (i.e. /dev/hda) does not
work, it only works for mounting CDROMs that contain filesystems.)

Thank you in advance.

You can access it with dd, or even copy the whole thing with cat.

Never tried it myself, but I can't see any reason, why "tar ft /dev/hda"
should not work (if your CD-ROM is an IDE as master on the first channel).
