Upgrading Linux

Post by Per O. H?gense » Tue, 13 May 1997 04:00:00

If I upgrade to Linux 2.1.36, am I able to restart my computer with my old
boot disk (1.2.8) in case something goes wrong? Can I start with my old
vmlinuz with the new source on the harddisc?

Will I need to upgrade the lib and include files before (or after) I
upgrade the Kernel?
What are the latest libs, and where might I find them.

I would be very grateful for answers..

Best regards,
Per O. H?gensen

If you go to ftp.wsc.com/pub/freeware/linux/update.linux/ you should
find all the information and packages you need to upgrade to the
latest kernel (stable) release. At least, so I'm told.

Please note that Linux 2.1.36 is a development version.
     Odd number here_____^___designates development.

If you are not a developer, you probably should stay with even
numbers, e.g. 2.0.30
  Even number___^______ designates general release.

There is an upgrade kit at www.linuxhq.com that should get you up to
at least 2.0.xx, and after that, it shouldn't be too much of a jump to
2.1.xx.

Good luck,

1. Upgrade Linux after hardware upgrades question

Wow ! impressive !
the boot.ini thing is just so funny !

you don't have to re-install your system, you just have to configure X to
use the PS/2 mouse. The only difficulty is that PCI card modem (probably
a winmodem ?) are not actually supported by Linux.

re-installing is just a totally time loss. In last resort upgrading ...
if you really want to use your new cd !
If you want to keep all of your hardly configured system ... the safest
is to upgrade by hand at package level
