1.2.13 -> 2.x.x Kernel and 2940 boot problems

1.2.13 -> 2.x.x Kernel and 2940 boot problems

Post by Aaron D. Turn » Thu, 17 Oct 1996 04:00:00

I've been trying to upgrade my kernel... so far I've tried getting 2.0.22 and
2.1.3 to work with my 2940.  However after the detection (for some reason
Linux now detects my 2940 (BIOS rev 1.21) as a 2940 Ultra) of my SCSI card,
the reset delay, the detection of my Plextor 4Plex CDROM, Quantum HD, and 2
SyQuest 3270's I get as far as:

VFS:  Mounted Root (ext2 filesystem) readonly

and then it just hangs.  My previous kernel (1.2.13) boots just fine.  FYI,
Linux boots from System Commander to LILO off the Quantum.  The first SyQuest
holds /usr.  I have compiled into the kernel 2940 support and support for SCSI
disks and Generic SCSI support.  SCSI CDROM support is via modules.

I would be appreciative if any repsonses were cc: to my email address below as
well.  TIA!

1.2.13 -> 2.x.x Kernel and 2940 boot problems

I'm having a very similar problem with a buslogic scsi setup. I've run
through the kernel compilation with no problem (2.0.22) but when I try
and boot it gets to the file system checking and then blows up, telling
me I must reboot because there were errors. I've run e2fsck but it still
gives the same response. When I go back and boot with 1.3.20 it works
just fine.

Any ideas will be much appreciated! Thanks!

Well at least you're getting an error message!  :-)  All that I get is after 3
minutes a blank screen when the screen saver kicks in.  The keyboard bring
back the screen, but alas no matter what I do the system won't continue
booting.  Arrgghhh!

Well if you or anybody else knows anything, PLEASE write... I'm still as lost
as I was 24 hours ago.

1. strange problems 1.2.13 --> 2.0.0 --> 1.2.13

Hi,

I have some strange problems with the new kernel source tree...

after the installation of the new sysvinit-2.62 the linux-2.0.0 kernel
complains sh:/bin/bash cannot execute...
with 1.99.7 this works fine
and at least I'm totally unable to recompile the 1.2.13 source tree due
some strange asm errors in main occurring in asm/io.h referenced by
bugs.h  (also within the asm tree). Of course I checked the appropriate
links to for the linux source tree /usr/include/linux
                                                asm

Please help....
 Michael
