usuall this means your drive is going south....can you boot from a dos disk?

I get 'boot failed' when I use the boot disk on my i486 DOS machine.  I've
tried the same book disk on other intel machines and I get to the regular
installation screen, so I know it's not the floppy that is bad.  Can anyone
think of why I am getting this message on my laptop?
