ADSL + PPPoE, How to using VM in XEmacs or Mutt

Post by li » Sun, 15 Sep 2002 13:00:05

Hi,

I am using ADSL+PPPoE to access the internet. I can send and receive
emails using mozilla. I tried to make VM and Mutt work without
successful. Do I have to setup sendmail for this job? Do I need
Fetchmail?

Thanks in advance for any help!

BTW: I am running Debian 3.0, kernel 2.4.18

That should noty matter as long as the client is configured to access your
mail / pop servers

1. Using ADSL (PPPoE) on Linux Red Hat 9.0 (Kernel 2.4.20-8)

I have a Red Hat 9.0 box which I installed recently with the hopes of
eventually using Linux totally and stopping use of Windows... but first, I
have to iron out some problems..

First on my list right now is the ability of Linux to support ADSL... or
inability.  When I install rp-pppoe 3.5 using pppd 2.4.1, dhcpcd 1.3.22-p14
and kernel 2.4.20-8, I followed all instructions religiously (ie: compile,
adsl-setup, adsl-start.), but all I got was a series of periods (".")
followed by "TIMED_OUT", and then adsl-start just terminates.

I've already tried doubling the time out value, to no avail.  The cables,
modem, etc. are all fine, since I can connect using Windows XP and when I
did a debug (DEBUG=1 adsl-start), I found that rp-pppoe is asking me to
check that my ethernet card is in half-duplex, 10Mb/s mode...  (I see 3 PADI
packets and nothing else).

So... if anyone can tell me how to change my card to half-duplex and 10Mb/s
mode, I'd be very pleased to know.. :p

ps: I'm using a Dell Inspiron 8200 (the laptop).  The ethernet card is a
3Com something or other which seems to be detected and works fine.  Below is
a dump of what rp-pppoe said (pppoe-sniff is out of the question since I
don't have a network at home):

* The following section is a dump of the packets
* sent and received by rp-pppoe.  If you don't see
* any output, it's an Ethernet driver problem.  If you only
* see three PADI packets and nothing else, check your cables
* and modem.  Make sure the modem lights flash when you try
* to connect.  Check that your Ethernet card is in
* half-duplex, 10Mb/s mode.  If all else fails,
* try using pppoe-sniff.
