X starting

Hi.

I've got a newly installed RedHat 6.0 box up.  It ran the Xconfigurator
just fine.  X starts; I can see the X cursor in the middle of the
display.  However, it never gets any further.  I reran the machine in
single-user mode and re-ran Xconfigurator.  Same thing.  How come I see
no windows/window manager? What can I do to get it working?  Thanks!

This means that the X server has started, but that you do not have a Window
Manager loaded.

2 Options:

1. Use the display manager
$ xdm

This manages starting, stoping, window managers etc for you.

2. Add a window manager, and an xterm to your X server startup

make a file ~/.xinitrc

Put the following in it:

# .xinitrc
# startx
exec xterm &
exec /usr/X11R6/bin/RunWM.Fvwm95 --FvwmMWM

then try startx again.

How are you starting X? If you type X<return> at the command prompt
this is what you'll get. There should be a script "startx" which
will set up the window manager etc.

I have the same problem, Xconfigurator won't let me set the refresh
rates to what they should be so when I start up  windows manager(KDE)
the screen is broken up and the X is in the middle of the screen. Last
time I could at least move it but as soon as I clicked on something the
whole thing froze up. Is there anyway I can manually set the rates, I
have an older monitor with the system I'm putting RH6 on and the options
for the horizontal refresh rate don't go low enough.

Thanks in Advance

Try using a different setup tool like XF86Setup. Maybe its a bug in
Xconfigurator. Yes, you can hand edit /etc/X11/XF86Config, but you
really need to know what you are doing. And are you sure it is starting
the correct X server?
