RH 5.2 FTP setup problems

RH 5.2 FTP setup problems

Post by Kevin Hughe » Fri, 25 Dec 1998 04:00:00

Hi, can anyone give me any pointers?
I have installed RH5.2 (server option) and most things seem to work OK.
Apache works from a remote machine but I seem to be unable to FTP onto the
box remotely.
I have set up some accounts and I can sit on the Linux box and FTP onto the
same machine using any of the accounts and I start off in the users home
directory as expected.
When connecting from a remote machine the FTP client connects but does not
receive the log on prompts etc. If I leave it for a minute or two I can
issue a disconnect and log back off, even though I have not really
connected.

I re installed RH5.2  from scratch and immediately set up some users and
experienced the same problem.

Has anyone come across this and more importantly, do you have a solution.

Merry Christmas All

Kevin

I'll bet the remote box's reverse DNS doesn't work correctly.  Can you
ftp from that machine into ftp.uu.net?  If not, that's your problem.
RH 5.2's ftpd is configured using tcp wrappers to check reverse DNS.
Of course, you could remove the wrapper from the relevant line in
/etc/inet.conf, or figure out how to turn off the reverse-DNS lookup.

RH 5.2 FTP setup problems

Thanks Rick,
I tried to connect to ftp.uu.net and connected OK.
I assume therefore it is not the machine. (I tried connecting form two other
machnies to the problem Linux box with the same results, this is a 'home '
network with three machines on it, no DNS but using lmhost/host files)

I may try using custom setup as it all worked using RH5.0 before I trashed
and rebuild using RH5.2 - server setup. Perhaps it is in the way the server
build is set up ......

I will give it a day or two before attempting this incase someone has the
solution.

Regards

Kevin
