Password Line Won't Take Information

Linux users,

Running RedHat 6.1.  Until recently the system has been running fine.  Came
back after the weekend and there was a "forced" reboot, I think a power
fluctuation at the office.  Nothing serious, just seems like the two
machines (one Win98 one Linux) rebooted.

The Linux box, however, has developed a very serious anomaly. The login
screen does not work anymore.  What I mean is this: at the GUI login screen,
I can enter text in the "username" line, but the "password" line does not
work.  No asterisks, no text, nada.   Obviously, in this condition I am
unable to sign in.

Now I AM able to hit CTRL-ALT-F1-F6 and sign in at the command console,
either as the user or as root.

Has anyone encountered this?  Any solutions?

Thanks!

Not really, but what if anything are in the logs? You should have some
kind of X log in /var/log/, maybe xdm-errors or some such.

You could also run 'rpm -Va' to see if anything related looks screwy.

Nothing particular jumps out.  All the log read normal.  How can I set up so
that I boot into KDE rather than GNOME?  Perhaps that is the problem.
