X install Video Problems

Post by jkeene » Wed, 16 Sep 1998 04:00:00

I just installed Linux RedHat 4.2, successfully - thanks to support from
this bulletin board;  Now I am trying to configure X Windows, using
Xconfigurator.  I have already SuperProbed my video card with the
following result:
S3 Trio 64V+
memory 1024 kbytes
RAMDAC: Generic 8 bit pseudo-color DAC

While in Xconfigurator I have tried using the 'generic' S3Trio 64V+
selection, but I get a message:
Server doesnt exist, cant continue.

I have also used 'unlisted card' and then I am asked which Server I
want.  I have tried Mono, S3, VGA, and SVGA, and I always receive the
message above. 'Server does not exist'.

My computer is a 'Packard Bell' (Packard Hell) pentium 133.  The video
board is integrated onto the motherboard (bastardized set up).  So there
is no manufacturer for the S3 Trio 64V+ I can try.

Can you help me??  Am I stuck with a video card setup not supported by
Linux, even though it is a listed chipset??
Thanks
jerry

You need the server for your video card, I don't know of one for the
S3Trio64v. My friend has the same card and the S3 server didn't work for
him. I have a S3Trio64vu+ and the S3 server didn't work for me either. I
just got the SVGA server for now (and it works) untill i can find a server
for my card (if there is one). I can't remember where to get the SVGA
server, but it's filename is X3323SVGA.tgz, there might be a newer one, i'm
not sure. I suggest you try the SVGA one, atleast for now.
Hope this helped

1. Using RPM to install video install driver

I have installed Redhat 5.2 to a new computer having a Jaton-87AGP
video board.  Linux runs in text-mode, but I am trying to get into
X-windows.  The board was not listed in the Redhat install script, so I
tried the generic-svga driver, but the screen just goes blank.

The video board is based on the Trident 975 chip which is listed in
the XFree86 distribution.  I tried downloading the driver, but upon
running RPM to install it, get the following message:

    > rpm -ivh xsvga-3.3.rpm

    failed dependencies:
            libgz.so.1 is needed by xsvga-3.3.3-3

Any clues?

(I am not a newbie to Unix, but I am new to installing Linux on PCs.)
