A CD-ROM drive is kinda like your head.  For it to work, there has to
be something in it.

Since you obviously have NO idea what you're doing..
or how to MOUNT a cdrom, and think of Linux as garbage..why don't you
just reformat your  HD and go play with windows?
Linux is *NOT* for idiots that don't want to learn, or are afraid to
do a little reading.  I admit that Linux takes time and effort to
learn (something that you are apparently unwilling to do), and that it
can be very intimidating.
I have only been using Linux for about2 weeks, and, with a LOT of help
from the fine people that peruse this group, and a LOT of web
searches, I've gotten my box configured so that "X" runs the way I
want it too, and connecting to the Internet is just a single command.
So, if you were to exhibit a little patience, and a willingness to
LEARN instead of having everything done for you, you might find out
for yourself why Linux is the OS for INTELLIGENT users.

Look, if you expect anyone to help you, quit the "piece of shit", etc.,
nonsense. You're coming across as a real jerk, and nobody's going to
want to help you. But I'll give you a free piece of advice anyway - get
yourself version 5.2 of RH for $1.95 at cheapbytes.

You need to mount the CD first (and no, I don't mean "attempt to mate
with it").

Try mounting your CD Rom by issuing the command

mount /mnt/cdrom before strting Xwindows

You must be trying to use glint, the graphical font-end to rpm that is
known to have problems (problems have been mentioned in this newsgroup
in the past).  I wish that Red Hat would either improve it or s*it.

Many of us install software from the command line using rpm directly,
and I have a number of aliases set up to make it easier for myself:

Alias                                         Means
----------                                    --------------
rpmhelp (display this menu)                   cat ~/.rpm-help-menu
rpmall (display all installed rpm names)      rpm -qa | sort | less
rpminstall (install a new rpm)                rpm -ivh <pkg.rpm>
rpmupdate (update an existing rpm)            rpm -Uvh <pkg.rpm>
rpmverify (verify condition of rpm)           rpm -V   <pkg>
rpmdelete (remove package)                    rpm -e <pkg>
rpmquery (obtain description of rpm)          rpm -qi <pkg>
rpmname (obtain name of rpm)                  rpm -q <pkg>
rpmwhich (see which rpm file belong to        rpm -Vf <filename>
rpminfo (obtain description of rpm)           rpm -qip <pkg.rpm>
rpmfiles (get file list for package)          rpm -ql <pkg>
rpmdocs (get doc files for package)           rpm -qd <pkg>
rpmconfigs (get config files for package)     rpm -qc <pkg>
rpmfake (get list of files in rpm)            rpm -qlp *.rpm | more <pkg.rpm>

The rpm tool is actually very useful if you take the time to understand
what it is and what it can do.  I understand your sarcasm, but that is
not necessarily the best way to obtain help.  :-)

Actually, if he's using Red Hat 5.1,

mount /mnt/cdrom

will work just fine.

It's a package manager, not a CDROM mounter.

I bet you use hammers on screws too...

You sound like the fools that * about what's on TV.
They don't realize that they don't have to turn it on in the first place,
or just change the channel.

Go back to using Windows and stop *ing.

You can knock almost 200 meg off that if, after selecting
'everything', you tab once and choose individual packages, go to the
documentation line and deselect the howto's in languages you don't
need. For me it knocked the install down to 657 Meg. It's is still a
big install, but it beats 830.
