DNS/BIND/NAMED setup question

DNS/BIND/NAMED setup question

Post by Jay » Sun, 22 Feb 1998 04:00:00

I've got my new slackware system up and running but the
DNS server I'd like to setup is driving me nuts...

I'm starting named ok.

I created a file named.boot
as specified in the docs and multiple
books I have.

the syslog has a message 'named.conf' not found when
named starts.

ok, I change the name of the file to named.conf.

Now it says there's a syntax error in the 'directory' clause

I put all the files in /etc/ and remove that line

it now says theres a syntax error near 'cache'

Does DNS require tabs instead of spaces in it's files?
Do I need to recompile this thing because it's messed up?
Does anyone have a copy of 'hostcvt'? It seems to have
disappeared from all the systems I've looked on.

Thanks for any help you could provide

These are books on BIND v4, you've got BIND v8.  A lot has changed.

See http://www.isc.org/bind.html (at least I think that's the URL,
doesn't seem to be up at this second).

named.conf is the file for BIND 8.1.1 - the BIND books are written for
BIND version 4.x.x

That is because named.boot and named.conf have entirely different syntax
structures.  named.conf kind of looks like C programming.

You have two options -

1.  Go to www.isc.org and learn as much as you can about BIND 8.1.1, or
2.  Download the rpm for BIND 4.9.6 and install that.  The DNS&BIND book
by O'Reilly and Associates covers 4.x.x, as does the majority of WWW
resources for DNS.

1. DNS/BIND/NAMED question

We have been having some difficulty with our DNS.  Is it possible to have aliases to other domain
names on the same host?  RE: host.domain.name and hostess.domain.name both have the same
host 123.456.789.012  The DNS will resolve it ok.  We can ping to any host that is aliases back to
host.domain.name and it works fine.  NSLOOKUP replies with the correct IP address.  The problem
is with Netscape and E-Mail.  The DNS doesn't like the hostess.domain.name aliases back to the
host.domain.name.  It complains that it doesn't like to be referrenced back to the host.domain.name.

So basically, the question is how can we configure our DNS to be seen by the Internet as more than
one domain but have one host manage it.

Thanks for any help.
