PPP connection dies slowly, Please HELP!!

Post by Anders Skovsted Bu » Fri, 07 Aug 1998 04:00:00

My PPP connection in Linux seems to work fine for maybe 5 minutes, but
then seams to die slowly.  This is, at first I can do ping and telnet
to many sites, while at last even ping to the PPP server I connected
to is failing.  If anybody know what my problem is, I would very much
appreciate some help!

(I'm not too good friends with my news reader, so I may miss your
posting.)

My system consists of:

  Linux localhost.localdomain 2.0.27 #1 ... i486
pppd version 2.2 patch level 0
  U.S. Robotics Sportster 33600 Fax V4.3.174

There is plenty of memory (48M) and disc space.

I use the following to setup the serial port:

  setserial /dev/cua2 irq 5
  stty crtscts < /dev/cua2

The modem seems to be working fine (and stably) when I do a normal
terminal login.  Besides, PPP is running fine to the same ISP from
Windows 95 (which has polluted parts of my harddrive ;-).

Because of W95, my hardware is setup in "Plug and Play" mode.  Could
that be the cause of my troubles.

At last I will include a few lines from my /var/log/messages, which
seems to say everything is fine: (I stripped the lines I didn't think
were important.)

Aug  5 14:04:58 localhost kernel: PPP: version 2.2.0 (dynamic channel
allocation)
Aug  5 14:04:58 localhost kernel: PPP line discipline registered.
Aug  5 14:04:58 localhost kernel: registered device ppp0

Aug  5 14:14:27 localhost pppd[1438]: Exit.
Aug  5 14:15:53 localhost kernel: PPP: ppp line discipline
successfully unregistered

Thanks in advance for any help or hints to this problem!  Again,

Sincerely,

Anders Buch

PPP connection dies slowly, Please HELP!!

Post by Anders Skovsted Bu » Fri, 07 Aug 1998 04:00:00

I strongly believe that my phone line is fine.  After all, PPP has been
running problem free from W95 for about a year.

Thanks for your response!

Just one thing, was the local ip address defined by you?

I think that this number should be is assigned by de ppp server. Take a
look at your scripts.

 Hi,

It would seem that a noisy line could indeed be the problem. A possible good
fix would be to upgrade the version of Linux to a more current one,
preferably one that runs on the 2.0.3x kernels. The version of PPP that
comes with those kernels seems to be more robust that earlier versions. I
saw that in action where I am, because we also suffer from severe noise on
our lines.

You may also wish to change your modem init string.
On a USR Sportster you can compensate for
a dirty line by changing the init string to include a higher setting
for the S10 register.  (Check your modem guide to see if the same
register is used). S10=7 is the default.  This sets the duration to
7/10ths of a second that the modem waits after loss of carrier before
* up.  You might try S10=21 to see if that corrects the problem.
If it does, you can reduce it to S10=14 to see if it still controls
the problem. The S10 setting allows themodem more time to distinguish
between a line hit from a true hangup by the other modem.

1. ppp incoming data slowly dies...

Hello I posted a note before about being able to get a connection and then
able to start navigating to a web site in Netscape, but after a few seconds
the incoming rate of data falls dramatically and then stalls.  Literally,
netscapse says '1k(stalled)'

I checked my warn log file and I get this
Mar 17 00:20:37 baz kernel: ppp_tty_ioctl: invalid ioctl: 5402, addr

argument

Does this have something to do with the problem and how do I fix this, if
this is not the problem then is this another problem.

I am currently running SUSE 6 on a PII 266 with 64Mg ram
