MOZART Sound Card: Failed attempts with /dev/mixer

Post by R R M Twe » Mon, 07 Oct 1996 04:00:00

It's been about two years since I last asked about configing for this
soundcard, and I didn't get the mixer running back then...  Last week
I checked DeJaNews and Altavista, and couldn't find anything new on
the use of this card... but I now ask again, since I *know* there must be
folks having some luck with this card.

I haven't tested the compile I ran last night for playing
sounds, although I had no problem with that last time around
(cat file.au >/dev/audio), but I do know that 'mixer.c' from
the sound kit still doesn't find the mixer in my new compile.

The following is my 'ls -l /dev/mix*'

        crw-rw-rw-   1 root     sys       14,   0 Jul 18  1994 mixer
        crw-rw-rw-   1 root     sys       14,  16 Jul 18  1994 mixer1

And here is my 'cat /dev/sndstat'

        Config options: 31602

        Installed drivers:
        Type 1: OPL-2/OPL-3 FM
        Type 2: SoundBlaster
        Type 10: MS Sound System

        Card config:
(MS Sound System at 0x530 irq 10 drq 3)
        SoundBlaster at 0x220 irq 5 drq 1
        OPL-2/OPL-3 FM at 0x388 irq 0 drq 0

        PCM devices:
        0: SoundBlaster 1.5

        Synth devices:
        0: OPL-2

        Midi devices:

        MIDI Timers:
        0: System Timer

        0 mixer(s) installed

When I run 'mixer' from the soundkit, I get the following error message:

SOUND_MIXER_READ_DEVMASK: No such device or address

Looking through the source of mixer.c, nothing obvious hits me in my
nose...  I to have soundcard.h in /usr/include/sys/.

Oh well, at least I got rid of that pesky "No BIOS32 extensions" boot-up
message.  Oh, and yes, I am kicking the Mozart card with DOS first, and
then warm-booting into Linux (NOW using loadlin with the new kernel I
compiled.)

SYSTEM INFO:
------------
Cyrix DX2-50 on a VLB MB, 16 meg
        Trident tvga9400cxi, 1meg
        Mouse on /dev/cua0
        Modem on /dev/cua1
        1.6g IDE master disk (hda3 linux 1gig, hda4 16m swap)
343m IDE slave disk (unmounted, old system)
        Panasonic CDROM on /dev/sbpcd

And for those who don't know about Mozart, I don't have my manual for
it available (left most of my data books at work this weekend, which
makes real fun for configuring) but it is jumperless, software initialized,
16 bit, SoundBlasterPro compatible (not SB-16)...  but anyone who could help
probably already knows this. (Using Mozart DOS install default configs)

I *will* be following this (these) newsgroups, so you can post your
reply... might as well get some sort of how-to into the DeJaNews archives
for the next person seeking the same info.

Thanks,
Mike

What you want to do is upgrade to version 3.0.1 or newer of the sound
driver; this may entail also upgrading your kernel, as version 2.90
ceased to be current quite some time ago and 3.0.1 works best with
version 1.2.13 of the kernel.  You will then be able to configure the
driver for your card instead of for cards it mostly emulates.

Thanks for that.  I am using 1.2.13 of the kernel (from Slackware 3.0)
so I guess I just have to hunt down the new sound drivers...  If that's
all it takes, it will be a pleasure.

1. Panasonic CD-rom drive and Mozart sound card

I have a Panasonic CD-rom drive, which uses as an interface a mozart 16
sound card,
my problem is that if i compile the kernel with sound support the drive
is not found, but
the sound works, if i don't use sound support and just enable the soft
configuartion of the drive
then it is recognized. I am using 2.0.27. If someone knows how i could
get the two to work together,
i'll apreciate your help
