Mouse (none in X)

Mouse (none in X)

Post by ToF » Mon, 03 Aug 1998 04:00:00

Hello to all
I'm (still) having problems with my mouse and X. When I go to X ('startx'),
the pointer is there on screen but I am unable to make it respond.
I have tried the following:

# setserial -g /dev/mouse
   dev/mouse, UART: 16450, Port: 0x02f8, IRQ: 3

# cat /proc/interrupts
   0:     27107   timer
   1:         506   keyboard
   2:             0    cascade
   3:             8 + serial                    {what does that '+' mean?}
   5:             1    SoundBlaster
13:             0    math error
14:    11330 + ide0
15:           47 + ide1

My XF86Config looks like this in the 'pointer section':
   Protocol      "Microsoft"
   Device        "/dev/mouse"
   ....
   Emulate3Buttons
           ~timeout   50

I had it working before (slackware), then changed to RedHat, lost the mouse,
reinstalled slackware and still had no mouse in x.
I'll get the colored screen with the big X but nothing I do makes it move,
nor does any pushing-on-buttons have any effect.
I tried to change my mouse from the LogiTech I normally use to an old
Addonics (MS-clone) but that didn't change anything. Neither did various
changes in mouse-protocol during configuration of x via xf68config.
Problem is there with and without gpm.
Does anybody have any ideas? I'm _really_getting_frustrated here!

Bingo...  and a huge *DITTO* to boot!

I'm in the same boat and am new enough to Linux to need pretty explicit
instructions whenever the solution is found.

Would really appreciate your sending any solutions you are offered to me by
e-mail.

Mouse (none in X)

What I did was during in xf86config, I set the mouse device name as
"/dev/gpmdata".  If your mouse works with the text mode then your mouse
should work in Xwindows.

My problem is that I can't get the mouse from jumping around.  I have a ps/2
mouse and set gpm -R -m /dev/mouse ps2 in my rc.local but it still jumps, so
I can't use Xwindows.  Help?

First some distributions have gpm and Xwindows conflicts, so kill gpm
before entering X.

Second in XF86Config the mouse needs to be set to the correct device

If you didn't do anything funky, /dev/mouse should work for serial mice.
For ps2 mice /dev/psaux shoiuld do the trick.
For others RTFM, those are all I have.

Third in XF86Config

You have to pick the correct mouse driver:

MS for 2-button MS and compatibles
Logitech 2-Button
Logitech 3-Button
MouseSystems 3-Button for MouseSystems and compatibles

If you mouse is switchable make sure you know what seting the switch is
on.

Try changing the link /dev/mouse to one of the other options, i.e if it is
currently pointing to cua0, change to cua1, and visa versa. I've found on some
installs that RedHat picks the correct mouse port, which I confirm. It then
sets up the link to the other port instead.

Has anyone else seen that happen?
