Xwindows still doesn't work :-(

Post by Mehmet Olm » Thu, 25 Jan 1996 04:00:00

Hi,

I posted an article this week about my problem with
Xwindows, but I unfortunately didn't get any answer.

I have a: P120
Diamond Stealth 64 Video Vram Graphics card
          Highscreen MS 1585P monitor

I've tried almost everything possible, but after I type:

X -probeonly my screen turns black and I don't get to
see the prompt. It's not a crash though.

I typed: SuperProbe and it told me:

Chipset: S3 (chipset unknown)
RAMDAC: Generic 8-bit pseudo color DAC
(with 6-bit wide lookup tables (or in 6-bit mode))

I don't understand a few things:

1- I don't know how, but Xf86config checked and promped me
that the chipset I have is a: 968
2- In the readme file it says that 968 is not tested.

3- I've tried: Option "nolineair" and Option "nomemaccess"
   both with no effect.

Could anyone help me out? Could the chipset be a problem? Or my monitor?
or what?

Thanks in advance,
Mehmet.

I don't know a thing about the 968, but have you tried basic
VGA??

Assuming that your installation is good, basic VGA should work
with just about any video card.  This isn't very useable, but
at least you can see it work!
