Mac Interface to ORACLE

Mac Interface to ORACLE

Post by Jean Anders » Thu, 23 May 1991 05:11:11

We are looking for an interface from MacIntosh Excel to our ORACLE database
on SUN4/DEC RISC.

Has anybody used ClearAccess (Fairfield Software) or Second Wind (Anju
Technologies)?  If you have used either of these products, I would be
interested in the following:

o   How good is the documentation?
o   How easy/comfortable is it for the database novice to use?
o   A database expert will set up the queries initially.  How easy would
it be for the novice to modify queries and become more independent?
o   Any select restrictions (handles joins, subselects, etc.)?
    o   Any insert/update/delete restrictions?
o   How robust is it on sql*net?
o   Any restrictions that strike you as odd?

Any comments will be appreciated.  If folks email to me directly, I'll be
happy to summarize and post.

1. Mac Interface to ORACLE

I haven't received any email from folks who have used these products, but
I *have* received email from folks who are also looking for a Mac-->ORACLE
interface. So here is the little I do know:

  Product:      ClearAccess
  Company:      Fairfield Software
  Address:      200 W. Lowe, Fairfield, Iowa 52556
  Phone:        (515)472-7198
Description:  This appears to be primarily a MacIntosh interface to a
variety of Mac applications (including Excel).

  Product:      Second Wind
  Company:      Anju Technologies
Address:      4962 El Camino Real, Suite 112, Los Altos, CA 94022
  Phone:        (415)962-9670
Description:  This appears to be primarily an Excel interface that runs on
                Mac OS, Microsoft Windows, OS/2.

ORACLE Corp. also announced ORACLE*Card this month which interfaces from the
Mac to a mini/mainframe database.  We are not considering using it because we
really need an Excel interface.
