dbase IV 'file already open' error

dbase IV 'file already open' error

Post by please_fill_ » Thu, 26 Jan 1995 04:03:53

can anyone tell me what's wrong with my dbase IV ?
Since I installed it on a Pentium I get the error-message
'File already open' everytime I try to index an open
dbase file.
I've already tryed every possible setting off the Ext & Exp memory
but nothing seems to work.
This error isn't documented in the help files or any other book I own

thanks a lot

Computers with a clock speed of 50MHz or greater changed the way the
clock tick is handled, part of gaining a little extra boost in speed.
Unfortunately, dBASE IV (some versions, specifically 1.5 and earlier)
use the clock tick as originally incorporated to manage open file
handles. When the hardward functionality changed, this management stopped
working.

A later sub-version of dBASE IV 1.5 included changes that adapted to this
change in hardware functionality. You can get a copy of this by contacting
Borland's Customer Service department at 408-461-9000.

You probably need to upgrade to version 1.5xx71, at least. Prior
versions will demonstrate the error you describe, on fast machines. The
Pentium wasn't around when dBASE IV was first released <g>.

To confirm the exact build you have, enter the command:

    ? version(0)

from the dot prompt.

dbase IV 'file already open' error

This is a two part question:

1) How do I stop a running db5w program?  I have found nothing to
work, short of CTRL-ALT-DEL.

2) Once I have done so, and I restart dBASE5, I find that attempting
to access the same files that the earlier program was using, results
in an error dialog box, saying, "File in Use By Another", and giving
me only one button, saying "OK".  Well, *NOT* Okay!  I try 'close
databases', etc, and cannot get dBASE to think that the file is
accessible again.  How do I get dBASE to allow me to access this table
again?

> Try "CLOSE ALL".

You'd think that'd work, wouldn't you? :)  Well, it turns out, it
doesn't. That's why this is so frustrating.
