Without ODBC it's not possible. You can probably communicate from PHP with
running progress 4gl client via named pipes.

Why don't you want to use ODBC? In case you change your mind, have a look

1. php + progress

Hi,

I have a PHP application that uses a database.  Can I use Progress?
AFAIK PHP doesn't support Progress.  Can I connect via ODBC?

The database is supposed to be installed either on Linux or on
Solaris.
