If you simply want to have Key-Word colouring and want to save some effort
I suggest that you try XiLights (shareware but cheap).  You get a colour
highlighter for VFP and Foxpro <= 2.6 which enhances the normal foxpro
editor - it is a very useful tool, I would not like to be without mine.
There is a fully functional demo with a nag screen, certainly on
compuserve, possibly on Willy De la Court's Visual Foxpro pages at

http://www.ping.be/~ping0150/vfp.html

If you want an editor which adds some automatic formatting features and
intelligent key word entry (short word entry with formatted layout and
prompting for key word parameters) I believe there is a VFP version of the
COB Editor Extensions (CEE)  I did use it for a while with Foxpro <= 2.6
and found it useful (it was freeware).  Perhaps someone knows where the
latest version can be found on the net.

If you want to do it yourself for the good of your soul then the best of
luck <g>

Cheers

Mike

u can see some examples for calling API functions on my page
(http://www.ontime.co.il/vfp.htm) or  on the VFUG Tips'n'tricks section
(http://www.transformation.com/vfug)
but to achive what u want - there's no need to re-invent the wheel
u can dload CEE (Cob Editor Extentions) or similar programs from several
places
around the net
