student for data storage project - sheffield uk

Post by ttmh » Tue, 09 Mar 1999 04:00:00

we are looking for a student to help us with a data storage project this
spring/summer. We need to integrate storage of appx 15000  documents a month
with a database system. As documents are all signed, they need storing with
signatures and our 25 filing cabinets are getting a bit full so we need to
identify a better system using modern technology, and then install it.

Anyone interested please email me with your snailmail address and
availability. (Do NOT sent attachments as I never open them due to possible
viruses.) whereupon a full project spec will be sent.

If you are not obviously local to sheffield/South Yorks, (eg if you are a
student away from sheffield but have family here) then please say so.

No replies will be sent to spammers, agencies or other irrelevancies.

Tim.

Tony,

Obviously they want some student to come in and design them a database that
would be worthy of a journeyman Database Analyst.

Next, they'll be asking for help since they had such an inexperienced person
doing their development.

I'll bet they also want an intern that they don't have to pay anything.

An intern?  Hmmm....  That could be a good idea.

Hang on there, isn't this an advert, didn't we get pissed off with MIT for
exactly the same type of thing?

on the same vane

I could use a Student Architect to design a conservatory at the back of
my house, also a couple of Engineering Students to shift a large summer
house down the garden (it will be too close to the conservatoty )and
build it. And maybe some Agricultural Students to do a make over of the
whole garden.
If you are away from home please say so. I cant afford to pay you a wage
so dont expect accomodation either.
If this is the only problem I can probably put up a few hammocks in the
said summer house.
No wages but it will look good on a CV so you are the ones who will
benefit in the end.

oh dear, cdp misery merchants/humour merchants  strike again.

when i placed my serious request for assistance in this generally serious
newsgroup, i did not expect to get such unhelpful replies.

Yes, we expect to be be paying for someone to help us work out how to
satisfactorily integrate 15000 documents per month with our
already-up-and-working pick database.  No, we do not want someone to "stand
in front of a scanner all day". We want to find a way of integrating our
printed and signed documents with the data that created them, and i fail to
understand why this ng (among one or two others the message was sent to) is
not a suitable place to air such a request. After all, we do want someone
vaguely conmputer literate and ideally, pick-aware. Its hardly an "advert"
is it? and I've seen many other messages of a similar type.

This is a ng i enjoy reading and posting to and i am sorry if this
legitimate request has been misunderstood. I will not post on this thread
again.

Tim, I apologize for the disparaging posts that some made related to
your original message. Sometimes when the first response to a message is
negative, subsequent replies follow a similar vein. At least *you* were
able to make a civil reply to the "humor merchants". Obviously, your
organization is free to approach this problem any way you choose.

Actually, I was hoping you would post an update to CDP when the project
is underway to let us know how things worked out and at least some
general comments about the approach that you used. An associate and I
were just discussing a possible project he may get to integrate
engineering drawings that would be indexed in Pick.

Best wishes for success,

George Shaunfield
