Quote:>How good is Btrieve?

I hear very good things about Platinum, but have no direct experience.
Btrieve, on the other hand, is a very good package. Here are a couple of
descriptions given by programmers on an ILINK conference:

 From: KEN PREVO
 Subj: WHAT IS BTRIEVE
 ---------------------
Btrieve is a file manager that maintains one or more indices to the data.
It is a product from Novel and available of any number of platforms. It's
a fast, powerful, reliable data management tool that is not language
specific.  All calls are low-level and from BASIC one uses a library
routine to pass pointers to the internal data needed by Btrieve.  It can
record lock in user controlled or Btrieve controlled fashion.  If you let
Btrieve manage locking, you can often avoid additional code in a
application.  Doing network aps that do recovery or transaction processing
 aren't quite as straight-forward.

 From: MICHAEL MACDONALD
 Subj: WHAT IS BTRIEVE
 ---------------------
BTrieve is a file access method by Novell. Novell SQL is a true relational
client server engine that uses BTrieve. The product (BTrieve) is well
established and pretty fast as well as flexible. It gets it's name from 'B
Tree' which is a kind of binary search for a record where you follow a
path through the 'tree'. For instance, suppose you are looking for
"Smith". Grab a record. The key is "Jones". Is "Smith" greater than or
less than "Jones". Branch accordingly. The libraries that you link into
your program actually do this for you.
