Need help-btrieve 6.15/Novell 3.12/odbc/ole db provider

Post by Michael Gupto » Wed, 09 Feb 2000 04:00:00

I have a Novell 3.12 server running btrieve 6.15 that is used by the Macola
accounting system. I have installed on my client machine PSQL 2000 for
Workstations and PSQL 2000 for Workgroups. I want to be able to access the
btrieve DB on my server via ODBC and also via the OLE DB provider from
SWsoft (www.sw-soft.com) . I am able to access the btrieve DB's located on
my local machine via ODBC and the OLE DB provider. The problem is when I try
to connect to the server in ODBC admin I get an error saying it was unable
to make the connection. In trying to create the DSN I'm using the server SPX
address returned from Pervasive's SmartScout. When I try to access a server
located btrieve db with the OLE DB provider it doesn't give an error but it
will not open a table.

    My questions are:

What is required to be able to access the btrieve db on the Novell
server via ODBC/SPX ?

What is required to be able to access the btrieve db on the Novell
server via the SWsoft OLE DB provider ?

     Much thanks.

Need help-btrieve 6.15/Novell 3.12/odbc/ole db provider

Michael,
In order to connect to your non PSQL 2000 servers from PSQL 2000, you
must set up a DSN on a Workgroup or Server engine pointing to
dictionary and data files on your 3.12 server.  If you use the
Workgroup engine, only other Workgroup engines will be able to see the
database.  If you were using the Server engine, all Clients, including
the Workgroup clients can see it.  Basically the clients will be
connecting to the PSQL 2000 engine and it handles the DBMS stuff.  I
have made this work in a similar situation, so I'm not completely
speculating.  The Smartscout stuff is only good for the transactional
connection (Btrieve) so it really is no help with the relational
connection (SQL/ODBC).
Good Luck,
John Pollard

Need help-btrieve 6.15/Novell 3.12/odbc/ole db provider

With Btrieve 6.15 on the server, you must use ODBC 2.04 ONLY.  The newer
ODBC drivers try to talk to the P.SQL 2000 ODBC drivers on the server, which
don't exist yet.  Alternatively, upgrade the server to Pervasive.SQL 2000.

Not sure -- don't know much about that one.

1. .LCK files for Btrieve 6.15 in Novell 3.12

We hava a ERP application (Platinum ver. 4.6 from EPICOR) and we are
testing Clarion 5 to develop applications around the btrieve files.
The problem is that the btrieve files doesn't have an extension
and when Clarion opens the files it doesn't open the .lck files.
We are not sure why is that.
We have the .DDF file in the same path of the btrieve files.

We think that there is something missing for Clarion so it can open de
.LCK files that are needed to open the table as Shared.

We have some APIs made with ODBC Middleware from Pervsive and Merant
and they open the .LCK files the same way Platinum does.

Our server plataform is Novell 3.12 and the clients are Win95

What do you suggest????.
