FileMaker Pro 3.0 Problem 1 (Sub-summary part)

Post by Michae » Fri, 07 Aug 1998 04:00:00

I am trying to make listings that can be both printed and viewed on the
screen.  I have used Sub-summary layout parts for the topic headers Here is
an example (not the actual data):

Illinois (S.S.)
    Springfield (Body)
    Chicago (Body)
    Paris (Body)
Indiana (S.S.)
    Indianapolis (Body)
Florida (S.S.)
    Orlando (Body)
    Sacramento (Body)

So, basically:

                   _________
S.S.:     |     | topic field |
-----------|-----------------------------
              |              ________
Body:    |              | Info field |
-----------|-----------------------------

Problem:  The fields in the Sub-summary dont show up when it is viewed on
the screen.  The print just fine, but dont view correctly on the screen in
browse mode.  Is this a bug, or is it made this way on purpose, or is it
something Im overlooking?  Any feedback would be most appreciated  Thanx
in advance!

Michael,

No bug, just Claris unique approach.  Sub Summary and any Summary parts for that
matter are calculated at PRINT time.  So until you print it, you can't see the
totals.  If you want to see the calculated report before printing just go into
Preview Mode.  This is the same as Print Preview on most Windows apps.

You could script this and when ever you run the report view it in Preview and
pause for you to review it prior to actually printing if you wanted.

1. Master Parts/Sub Parts/Sub-Sub Parts

I am building a pdoxwin 5 application for a manufacturer that requires
each part to use components, and each component to use sub-component.  I
am currently maintaining multiple tables along the lines of:

Master Part (keyed on MasterID)
Master Details (keyed on MasterID + SubID)
Sub Details (keyed on MasterID + SubID + SubSubID)

Each component is an inventory item taken from an inventory table.

Where I'm having massive problems is in the management.  The master part
must have costs built from all components, but quotes and invoices can't
show the cost and component breakdown.  this means lots of complex
queries and calulations and complex forms for showing detail tables and
detail-detail tables, and lots of long OPAL methods for correctly
updating, deleting, duplicating etc. on the multiple tables.

The Question:  Am I just getting what I deserve, and this is why
manufacturing software is so expensive?  or is there something i'm
missing in the use of the 3 tables described above, since this model
limits me to 3 levels of assembly.

thanks
