Question about JAM from JYACC Inc

My group is also interested in hearing from experienced users of
JYACC JAM. I saw demos of it last week at the Sybase User's Conference
but haven't yet talked to an actual user. We all know the conference
exibitors have a party line which may or may not match what a real
user might say.

Our platform is: SUN SPARC stations, Unix, Sybase

Thank You,

I reviewed V3.16 of JAM and Formaker for the June, 1989, issue of
UnixWorld magazine, and have looked it it from time to time since.
It is a competent and usable UIMS (user interface management system),
the present version of which is useful for generating windowing
front ends for databases and applications written in various compatible
3GLs, such as C. It is an economical solution, inasmuch as you can
develop on an inexpensive platform (on which the license is cheaper)
for another platform. I can recommend it for certain purposes, with
the qualification that I haven't tried the latest version.

Whether it is the best solution for your particular situation is
the main question. For developing Unix X-Window front ends I prefer
things like Eiffel or XVT for most purposes. For database applications
developed from scratch, I prefer Progress over Sybase, Oracle,
Informix, or any other db product based on SQL. An application can
typically be developed in Progress for less than a fifth of the time
and cost of doing so in other db products, and maintained for even less
than that. With Progress, there is little need for something like
JAM, especially with the upcoming V7, which will more fully support
X-Windows and MS-Windows.

If you are stuck with something like Sybase, then Progress may still
be the best solution for developing a front end to it, since it
provides a way to solve the many kinds of query problems that are
syntactically impossible in SQL, even in Transact-SQL.
