Problem With FoxPro LAN 2.0 on newer machines

Post by John Sava » Wed, 08 Apr 1998 04:00:00

Although our company upgraded its copy of FoxPro, one of our clients
didn't.

Our copy even of FoxPro 2.0 runs nicely on a Pentium, in extended mode
(foxprox) as well as standard (foxpro).

Their copy, though, when run on a Pentium gives the error "MEMO file
missing/invalid" when attempting to save a screen after editing. As
well, it has some other strange behavior. (This applies only to
foxprolx, not foxprol.)

They have FoxPro LAN, so the program is foxprol and foxprolx, and
their build may be slightly earlier - the "Run" choice is not present
on their menu.

Upgrading to the _current_ version of FoxPro doesn't seem to be an
option; I tried converting a DOS application to VFP 3.0, and it was
very slow. (We can compile it on 2.5, because we bought the
distribution kit for version 2.5 for DOS, but that means we won't be
able to maintain at the customer site.)

Has anyone out there encountered this problem (I searched on DejaNews,
and found one person who may have had the same problem; she did not
describe her situation in detail, or get a useful answer)?

Problem With FoxPro LAN 2.0 on newer machines

One reason VFP can be slow is if 1) the machine is below a Pentium 133 or
2) doesn't have at least 16 megs of memory.  A slow machine and/or limited
memory makes for long coffeebreaks.

1. FoxPro 2.0/LAN and Lantastic: Problem Combo?

I'm thinking of upgrading my office network from a non-brand (I got
it free) to Lantastic 4.1.  We use FoxPro 2.0/LAN for almost everything
we do, so before I can upgrade, I want to make sure that it will be
compatible with Lantastic.

Has anyone had any problems with this combo? Artisoft claims that FoxPro
2.0/Lan is 100% compatible with Lantastic, but I want to check with you
who actually use it.

We're currently running with one 486-33DX as a dedicated file-server,
2 386-33DX's, and a 486-25SX.  We plan to add 3 nodes this summer. Does
this sound like a small enough configuration for Lantastic?  We have
thought about going to Novell, but the costs seem pretty huge for a 5-node
network like ours.  We'd like to start with Lantastic and when we have
20 people or so on it, upgrade to Novell.  Any insights on this will be
appreciated as well (I'd enjoy having a private e-mail from Novell).

Thanks.
