FM Pro Developer Edition Questions

FM Pro Developer Edition Questions

Post by Lyle Chamne » Sun, 11 Oct 1998 04:00:00

Hello,

I have a few questions about the Dev. Edition that I could not resolve
from reading this group or from FileMaker's site. If any one can answer
them it will be greatly appreciated and will determine if I will plunk
down the cash for the software ( already have FM Pro 4.0 and it's great!
).
1. Can the FM 'Splash' screen be replace with one of my own design?
2. Can the menus be completely customized? i.e. no FM menu items
3. If I develop an app in FM Pro 4.0 Dev. Edition, do my clients have to
buy any FileMaker products?  - the 4.0 /4.1 issue notwithstanding (
using only 4.0 - does what I need).
These apps will NOT be web based nor enabled.

Thanks in advance.

Yes.

If you use the Runtime Binder, you can remove the menus and run in Kiosk
mode.  I've also been told that once bound, such files can then be
opened with FM 4.02 or 4.1, and run as NON runtime files, still in Kiosk
mode.  there is also a plugin called RemoveMenu which does  the same
thing for FM 4.0.

Be aware Runtime files are NOT networkable.  I am not sure if files
bound for the specific purpose of removing menus and subsequently run as
regular files are networkable, I think so, but testing would have to be
done to see if that functionality is retained on the network. :) If you
just wish to DISABLE menu items, and not remove them completely, you can
do that with password access selections.

The FM DE contains both Mac & PC versions of FM.  You develop in that
just as usual. The DE part comes in with the Runtime Binder, and all the
other tools packaged with it, including Java classes, code for writing
plugins. etc.  If you create Runtime applications using the binder, your
clients do not have to purchase any other FM products. But the
applications must be standalone, as they are not networkable.  If you
wish to distribute networkable solutions, each of your users must buy a
copy of FM for each seat. Larger networks (say more than 8 or so) will
function much better with a copy of FM Server and a dedicated server.

Hope this answers your questions..

Well this is strange. I've seen many FileMaker runtimes that work in a
client/server environment, for example OfficeWarp and most of the other
office suites developed with FileMaker. The vendors of these solutions
specify prices for a server version and for client versions and they say
the user doesn't need FileMaker. What gives?

the fmp3 SDK allow creation of networkable runtimes.
The 4th don't...

because Claris claims, that they loose some fmp sales because of runtime
devolleped.

But can't FM Pro runtimes still take advantage of all the new web features
of 4.0? If that's the case, then couldn't a "networkable" solution be
created by putting it on an intranet or something like that? (How
slow/awkward/crippled would this kludge be?)

I was hoping that FM had plans to eventually add the networkable parts back
in to the Developer Edition. Have they indicated anything about that one
way or another?

1. FileMaker Pro Developer Edition runtime question

Can FMP Developer Edition create runtime applications for Windows even if
the Developer application is on a Mac?

I would prefer to develop on my Mac but I need to create standalone apps for
both Macs and PCs.
