Windows, FileMaker, and Color

Windows, FileMaker, and Color

Post by David J Hayde » Mon, 28 Oct 2002 06:21:55

I've been having odd problems with FileMaker and color lately.  Generally I
develop things on a Mac, and then test them on a Windows machine -- making
changes as necessary.  I always have my color settings set to the "Web"
sub-palette.  Lately I've run into some inconsistencies across individual
Windows machines that have me confused.

On my Windows test machine, which is a Dell, I have Windows 2000 installed,
and the machine's color setting set at "True Color" -- the highest setting.
In FM application settings I have the color set to "Web palette".  On this
machine I have never had any real color issues -- while colors are always a
little darker, they all show up.

BUT, this past week I installed a solution that tested fine on my Dell onto
to others with the same settings.  When I did this, some colors
(particularly grays) did not render at all, and some of the lines in my
layout were invisible.  What gives?

Any advice, experience, and tricks GREATLY appreciated!

I'm still struggling with this issue, so I'm "bumping" my question up to see
if anyone has any ideas....  HELP!

What resolution are the affected systems running? I've seen 1px
lines disappear on a 640*480 when designed on a 800*600 monitor.

Cheers

Windows machines use a different gamma etting.  If you want your Mac to
show you what the world looks like to everyone else, you can adjust the
gamma as part of the calibration process in the Monitors control panel.
If you're doing cross-platorm work this can be very valuable.

Thanks, that1s actually a great tip, though unfortunately not the solution.

As a side note I tried an experiment earlier today:  I sampled some of the
colors that were not rendering well into Photoshop, built some color blocks,
saved them as a jpeg and viewed them on the affected machine via a browser.
The colors rendered fine -- so I think this is a FM issue.
