Paradox 4.5 for DOS and Windows 95 DOS 7.x

Post by Mike de Estrad » Thu, 17 Sep 1998 04:00:00

I had been running Paradox 4.5 in a multi-config system with MS-DOS 6.22 and
Windows for Worgroups 3.11. I ran it under DOS and it worked fine. I now
have a similar multi-config system with the MS-DOS 7.x that comes with
Windows 95, and it refuses to run under MS-DOS 7.x. I have noticed this
problem on two different machines, so it is not machine-dependent. All my
other DOS programs run in DOS mode under MS-DOS 7.x.  I start Paradox and
receive the following message at its start screen:

        Unexpected Condition: GP 0000 at Paradox:28:1323 -- Leaving Paradox

Then it returns to the DOS prompt with the message still displayed. My
Config.Sys is as follows:

FILES=40
BUFFERS=20,0
STACKS=9,256
LASTDRIVE=E
DOS=HIGH,UMB
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE 16384 RAM M9
DEVICEHIGH=C:\UCDIDE.SYS /D:OEMCD001
DEVICEHIGH=C:\WINDOWS\RAMDRIVE.SYS 2048 512 224 /E

Does anyone have a fix or know why this is the case? TIA. Mike.

you'll probably need more buffers, however, that shouldn't give you this. Things
to check include the parameters you are giving it, as it needs a parameter to
let it handle the extra memory that is now available.

You do not need that many buffers if you let W95 diskcache manage your
files.
I used Ncache2 (DOS) for years with 10 buffers with Paradox.

This might be * on TO MUCH memory (>16M)

On any machine with over 16 meg of memory, you need to use the -extk
#### switch on the pdox command line, where #### is 16000 or less

Yes, thank you all. I used the -extk 16000 switch on the command line, and
that fixed it. My new Windows 95 machine has 64 Mb of RAM, and it didn't
realize this was a problem, since my old DOS 6.22 / Windows 3.11 machine
only had 16 Mb.

1. Windows 95 Networking with Paradox 4.5 for DOS

I am trying to set up a two-user network using Windows 95 (Osr2) using two
local copies of Paradox 4.5.  Windows (apparently) will not allow a drive
letter to be mapped to a shared folder which resides on the machine where you
are attempting the mapping.

Each Paradox copy can access files from the other machine with no problem.
However, I cannot assign a common location for the lock files. If "A" is the
local machine and "B" is the remote, I can lock a file on "A" from "B".
However, I can still edit that file on "A" from "A" because "A" cannot see the
lock and thinks the file is not shared.  I tried the SUBST command, but it did
not help (might have done it wrong).

Any assistance would be greately appreciated.

Thanks,

Tom Coleman
