SMART by Informix??

Post by David Schron » Thu, 15 Apr 1993 01:31:07

I was just contacted by a potential client who has purchased a product
called SMART by Informix.  Can anyone give me a quick brush up on what
SMART is and how it related to the other Informix products?

Thanks!

Now I've heard of STORM and I hope to be beta testing this.  According
to my knowlage I've never heard of such a product.  I second the motion
for information.

The following two files may be of some interest.  Note that they are somewhat
dated.

The first is a listing of SmartWare BBS systems that was pulled off of one
of those systems.  I'm not sure how the second one got here, though it does
say it's from Informix.

Good luck,

Walt.

Informix/SmartWare BBS's

Last Updated:  March 26, 1991

This is a list of BBS's that specialize in topics and files related to
SmartWare.  They have also started to include conferences for Informix-4GL and
Unix in general.

Some of these boards "echo" the messages in selected conferences among each
other, so that each BBS carries the traffic from all boards.  The main BBS is
run by Informix in Kansas by the group who support SmartWare.  This support
group can be addressed from any of the linked boards.

SMART is (or was) an integrated package including word-processor,
spreadsheet, and database manager.  I say "was" because the last time
I saw this package was on a 3b1.  It (SMART, not the 3b1) may very
well still be in production.  I assume it has gone through several
upgrades, since I saw it.

The database manager was very Informix-like, if it wasn't Informix.
Spreadsheet was so-so, but if they've plugged in Wingz, it would be
much-improved.  I was equally non-impressed by the word-processor,
but remember, I'm talking about ~1985 software on a 3b1.

SMART by Informix??

Post by Jerry Luk » Fri, 16 Apr 1993 02:20:18

Informix created the integrated package "SMART", which include:
Database, Spreadsheet with graphic capability, Wordprocessor, and
Communication.  The latest version for DOS was 3.1.  After that
Informix changed the name to SMARTWARE, current version is 1.5.
There was also UNIX and XENIX wersions of the SMART, but Informix
drop them.
We are using SMARTWARE and I like it.  The Database is
very good.  The wordprocessor is the best tool to edit and sort text
in columns.

OK, here it is.

"Smart" (and it's later version SmartWare II) were products developed by
Innovative Software, Inc.  It ran on MS-DOS and a limited number of Unix
platforms, and consisted of an integrated DBMS, spreadsheet, word processor
and communications module, all linked by a main menu.  Smart continued to
be marketed by Informix for a short while after the merger.

Currently Smart is supported and marketed by CS Computing Services, Inc. of
Toronto, Canada.  (the press release announced that CSC was renaming itself
to ANGOSS Software Corp in February.)

SmartWare II is an Informix product as well as Wingz is.
Informix bought Innovative Software to get Wingz, and they also got SMART...
SmartWare only runs on PCs and includes spreadsheet, database, wordpr, comm
BTW is very good.

1. How to empty associated smart browser when smart viewer is emptied

Within a V8 window I have a smart browser associated with a smart viewer
using a smart query.

To empty the viewer I use the statement:
RUN dispatch IN THIS-PROCEDURE ('add-record'):U

The problem is that the browser still displays old records though the viewer
is already empty. How can I empty the smart browser (or smart query) too?

Thanks in advance
