Is the size of the image datatype limited to 64kb ?

No, the image datatype can hold up to 2,147,483,647 bytes (2 GB).

There is a limit of ~120K for image data inserted interactively
using the TSQL "writetext" command.  Open Client programs can
use a different technique to write larger value.

Note that the "set textsize" command can limit the amount of
data displayed for output.
