Sybase devices and AIX logical volumes

Sybase devices and AIX logical volumes

Post by Brian Glaes » Wed, 24 Aug 1994 04:58:22

Question that I don't think I've seen before.

I have an RS/6000 running AIX 3.2.5.  We have 2 1Gig drives and 2 2Gig
drives attached.

My question is whether or not it makes sense to partition the 2Gig drives
into logical volumes of 300 MB or so, and let Sybase use these as database
devices?

I mean after all, the logical volumes are all on the same physical
disk, so I should get the same performance as if I had just one big logical
volume that was used by Sybase for both data and log.

Thanks,
Brian Glaeske

Sybase devices and AIX logical volumes

The LVs may all be on the same physical disk, but they are not in the same
spot on the PV.  The less time it takes for the read/write head to get
where it is going, the less time it takes to get your data.  I would
suggest you partition your LVs in such a way that you can place your
hot tables on the center of these drives.  You can specify that when you
create the LVs (inside, or outside of SMIT).

Also, you always want to separate your data and log onto different PVs if
possible.  That way you can get something close to parallel writes for
    logged transactions.

Good luck-

1. HP-Logical Volumes and Sybase Logical devices ?

On HP while it's not documented, you can use logical volumes instead
of pure raw partition.  One of the features of logical volumes is that
ii is "soft partitionning".  Hence, even after its creation, a given logical
volume can be extended.

My question is:  If I can extend a logical volume on which is mapped a Sybase
device, can I then extend the device so that it includes the new disk space
just allocated to the logical volume ?

I tried to figure out in the doc how to do this by as logical volume are not
even documented, they did not documente this capability.  Maybe it simply
doesn't exist.

If you have any insight ...
