Cntrl-K Woe

Post by Vibhavasu Vuppa » Wed, 10 Feb 1993 16:26:08

Hi,

I'm sure this is a FAQ and naive but I don't seem to have
any other choice for a quick answer.

Is there any way to replace the functionality of cntrl-k with
a single key (say Esc) ?

We are running APT WB 4.0.2 and are in the process of installing 5.0

Please post or e-mail.

Thank you.

Nope, we don't have no sch*king FAQ's!!!!! ;-)

Yep, try this:

(You may/will want to make a copy of the termdef directory and put
it somewhere where you can play with it.  If you modify the main
termdefs in the sybase directory you could cause lots of problems.
We have a separate directory for our customized termdefs.  This
way we don't have to worry about messing up the sybase directory
and people can always grab a copy of the original and customize
their terminal the way they want it.)

Make sure your SYBTERMDEF is set to point to your termdef
                directory(/usr/sybase/termdef by default?)
Bring up the Tool Set Customizer for APT 5.0
(enter 'tsc&' at the UNIX prompt)
Choose the 'Termdef Manager' menu option; this will bring
up a list of terminal types
Choose your terminal type(SYBASE_TERM or TERM) and select
'Modify' from the menu bar; this will bring up a
menu of 8 items for the terminal type you selected
Choose the 'Function Key Def/Map' option; this will bring up
a screen with a list of all current function key
definitions and mappings for this terminal type.
If you want to add an entry for the 'Esc' then select the
'Create' option from the menu bar; this will bring up
a window where you can define function key definitions.
To Assign the 'Esc' key to do the old ^K (now called ToggleMenuMode
and only assigned to ^R) enter 'Esc' (or 'ESC') in the
'Label' field; enter 'ToggleMenuMode'(or select from
the values--^V function) in the 'System Action Name'
field; and enter the key sequence in the 'Key Sequence'
field that represents the sequence your terminal type
will be generating.  For vt100's you would enter '\E'
in the key sequence field; for xterms you enter 'Escape'.
You've now defined the 'Esc' key to have the same functionality
as the old ^K key binding.
Successively select the '/' from the menu bar and 'Apply'
until you 'Apply All Changes'. Selecting this option
will pop up a small window telling you that

                        Termdef "terminal" updated.

Now you can call up APT or DWB(as long as your SYBTERMDEF points to
the directory where your 'new' terminal definition lives) and your
mapping of 'Esc'=ToggleMenuMode will be in affect.  Hitting 'Esc'
in succession will cause the cursor to move back and forth between
the menu bar and the screen work area.

You can use the 'Control Key Mapping' menu option to actually set
^K up to act the was it used to, i.e., execute the ToggleMenuMode
command, but remember that you would be overriding the default
value of the APT 5.0 ^K mapping.

Questions? Comments?

Several others have already told about the possibilities with 5.0,
but let me report that it is doable with version four as well, pro-
vided you get some assistence from Sybase like we did. What we got
was the source code for the terminal definitions and the compiler to
compile them, so that we could swap F6 and PF1 which our customer
required.
