Upgrade Windows 98 to Windows 98 second edition questions

Post by JLH » Sat, 12 Apr 2003 20:16:31

I have a 3+ year old HP Pavilion 6460 with win98 installed.

For somereason, my tatoo is missing. My system and recovery disks do not work.
I know I can go to a service place and get it retattooed,,, however, can I save
that money by just intalling a full retail version of Windows 98 second
edition???

If I go that route, what problems do I cause ??

Are there other items on my HP system disks that I still need and therefore have
to get the machine RETATOOED in any event ??

Sure, if you install retail version of Windows, you may have to look for
drivers and such. Its not the end of the world, but may be an inconvience.

And I thought, until now, that I knew what a tattoo is. <G>

You may have trouble finding any version of Windows 9X now, because Microsoft
quit marketing them some time ago. Give Google a shot.

As for your question about what you still need from your HP system, only you
can answer that.

Download windrvexpert.zip off the net.
It lets you save all your installed drivers
to a directory on your hd. You can then
burn the directory to a cd. When you install
win98se, you will have your video, sound, modem
drivers on the cd you just burned. Works great for
XP also. Comes in handy when you want to get rid
of hp win98 or xp.

Hello:
If Barabbas' suggestion won't work for you, you should be able to
download the drivers you need from HP.
It might help if you do this before you reformat. Just save the drivers
to a CD and then proceed.
HP may not have all the drivers you need. For instance, if you have the
Intel 810 graphics, my experience has been they don't provide this driver.
You can download that from the Intel Web site.

I did it with my Pavilion 4445 and it went well. Hp's I only needed the
drivers for the sound combo card and the multimedia keyboard. I got the
drivers for the soundcard from HP and the keyboard off my disk just by
brousing the disk.  good luck. Bill N.
