Hi:

What you say was true for Win95 and prior.  I would not be so sure with
Win98. <g>

Subscribe to Woody's Office Watch (www.wopr.com).
In the weekly "issue" received today he says that the Office 2000 Beta
Registration Wizard bodes very ill.  MS appears to be setting up a
REQUIREMENT that you register within 50 uses of an Office application
or the plug will be pulled.  One of the codes it collects is unique to
the particular machine that you install the software on.
  So if you change machines or motherboards and have to reinstall the
software, Big Brother Bill will know.

One can speculate that since Bill & Co. don't give a damn about you
when it comes to updating Windows98 - you can do it *only* over the
internet one machine at a time - the same logic will apply.

However, I recall that Woody mentioned that of the three ways that
require registration - mail, fax, or internet - all require that MS
get the code I mentioned and that you must get and enter a
registration code from them.

I suspect that they will require you to do the same dance upon every
install of Office 2000.

Here is something I found on the net.
It suppose to get around the registration requirement for updates.
(I have a LEGAL copy of 98 and have no need to use this, I just thought it
was intresting).

****************************************
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion]
"RegDone"="1"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Welcome\RegWiz
]

I would suspect that the Office 2000 registration DEMAND is more
resistent to workaround or else Woody Leonhard wouldn't be kicking as
much sand about it as he is.

Besides, there will be the inevitable program updates/fixes that MS
will probably try to force you to do over the internet - the original
thread to which I responded some message ago and they will require
valid registration before allowing downloading.
