"Unknown User" in "My Computer" | "Properties" After Win98 Re-install

"Unknown User" in "My Computer" | "Properties" After Win98 Re-install

Post by Tom200 » Thu, 16 Sep 1999 04:00:00

While troubleshooting a Sony Superstation tape drive, Sony tech
support had me re-install my Win98 4.10.1998 OEM installation from the
Windows/Otions/Cabs directory, two problems arose:

1.)  I can no longer save my internet login password in DUN

2.)  When I display "My Computer" | "Properties" | "General" the
user name is displayed as "Unknown User" at "Unknown Organization."

Note:  When I install software, InstallShield also comes up with an
"Unknown User" at "Unknown Organization" display.  However, on the
Start menu, I still have a choice to "Log Off Tom Lackamp"

This machine has always been set up as a single-user machine,
without user profiles.

I've tried enabling user profiles from Passwords in the Control
Panel, with no luck.

I can't find the solution in the Knowledge Base.  Anyone have any
ideas?

 Re:  Password saving

I found an article in the Knowledge Base which had me rename the
password files, remove and re-install DUN, and change a couple of
entries in the registry.  After carefully performing this procedure, I
still couldn't save my password.  At the completion of the procedure,
the RNA.PWL and TOMLACKA.PWL files weren't re-created.

I'm guessing  that the "Unknown User" symptom might be the cause,
or one of the causes, of my password saving problem.

If anyone has any ideas, I'd sure appreciate it.

Thanks!

Hi, Tom.

See http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q137/3/61.asp it may
solve your problem on DUN password saving.

See in the registry the registration information at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion, the
RegisteredOwner and RegisteredOrganization keys and enter the correct
informations. There are some more registry places keeping such informations,
repost if still in trouble.

"Unknown User" in "My Computer" | "Properties" After Win98 Re-install

Ovidiu,

Thank you very much for your prompt response and for your interest
in my problem.

I set my user and organization variables in the registry, as you
described below.  Now my machine properly displays my name.

However, that wasn't the cause of the inability to save my DUN
password.  I did quite a bit more testing tonight, and have noticed
that the core of the problem now might be the inability to create my
.pwl files.

I notice that there seems to be a great difference in the problem
causes between the "Save Password" box being greyed out and being
available.  I should have mentioned in my original post that my box is
available.  I *did* run through the Knowledge Base article you cited,
though.

I've copied you on an email I sent to Ron Baldour which summarizes
my testing and observations.

Again, Ovidiu, thank you very much!

Best,

   Tom
